The Repentant Lieutenant in Othello

Shakespeare borrowed the plot of Othello from the novel The Moor of Venice by Giraldi Cinta, and reproduced it accurately.

The tragedy Othello is not just a story of jealousy; it is the tragedy of a collision of two worlds. One of them is a world of absolute cynic and manipulator, Iago, and the second world is the world of all the other characters in the tragedy, including, perhaps, even Rodrigo. The reader meets Rodrigo for the first time when he had already been dragged by Iago on his, when the world he saw was not reality, but a grotesque combination of reality with chimeras created by the evil genius, Iago. How is it possible that people allowed to be manipulated to such an extent that there monstrous crimes happened?

Immorality of Iago is based on the fact that the values of the others are not important. He says that he has lost his good name, the immortal part of himself, and only an animal is left. Iago asks himself: Where is my good name? And at the same time he says that good name is nothing more than fiction. Like Plato’s Callicles Iago knows only one reliable authority – his own desires. This is his measure of things. Everything that somehow hurts his interests should be destroyed. And it is logical for his ideology.

Iago was hoping to become Othello’s lieutenant, but Othello chose Cassio and thus there is a reason to take revenge on Othello and Cassio. Dissatisfaction of gossip can become a reason for revenge. Iago says that Cassio is Desdemona’s lover.

Cassio is the repentant lieutenant in the tragedy. He is highly educated, but young and inexperienced in battles. Iago resents the high position Cassio occupies and dismisses him as a bookkeeper. Cassio is truly dedicated to Othello. He was very ashamed after being induced in a drunken strife on Cyprus and losing his position as a lieutenant. Iago uses Cassio’s youth, good look, and flirtatious manner with women to play on Othello’s frangibility about Desdemona’s fidelity.

Cassio accompanied Othello as his friend when he was courting Desdemona. He is popular, he can speak well, and he is lively and trusting. No wonder Iago eventually convinces Othello that Cassio is Desdemona’s lover. After Othello’s death Cassio was made the governor of Cyprus.
