The Quality of Editing in Psycho

Psycho is one of the most famous and unique movies in modern US cinema. Basically, it helped Alfred Hitchcock to earn its name and worldwide recognition while redefining him as one of the best directors. This movie also withstood the tests of time, and this statement is evident after considering its recent remake. This movie is an incredible achievement in terms of its unique combination of horrors in both psychological and psychical ways.

It’s true that montage editing plays a huge role in the success of Psycho, and this is where this tool is used in its outrageous and bold way. One of the greatest scenes that stand out in this famous movie for its excellent editing techniques is in the shower. It’s one of the most critically acclaimed and popular scenes, and people will never forget it. This is when Marion Crane is taking a shower in her motel room while remaining unsuspecting and innocent.

Then cameras show some shadow that enters her bathroom, and the music is added at a perfect moment to add an extra dramatic effect to the entire scene. Besides, cameras shift to shower curtains, and people can see the profile of Marion’s figure, while the murder is not clearly shown in this scene. It’s quite short because it lasts about 40 seconds, but it includes many shorts edited trying to design the best scene of violence and horror.

George Tomasini was the editor of this movie and he managed to create a brilliants scene where people were left to imagine its brutal violence, thus making it even more intense. In general, its effect was created by using 4 different scenes, shots of hands and the face, shorts of Marion fighting with her attacker, shots of her killer stabbing toward cameras, and a gut-retching scene of blood pooling in the shower and flowing down the drain.

In summary, the editing techniques used in this movie definitely contributed to its major success. Another brilliant example of this work is the scene in the hotel parlor where Marion gets to know about Norman Bates. It’s still used as a perfect example of how the right timing in shots and alternative placements of cameras play their important roles. People should also pay attention to the montage editing of the scene that depicts murdering Arbogast because it’s all about collages that encourage the whole audience to compare and contrast the qualities of every shot they see while enjoying their viewing and story.
