Herman Melville is one of the most talented American writers who was born in NY in 1819. Actually, his ancestors were Dutch and Scottish settlers and included a number of well-known leaders of the American Revolution. For example, his grandfather was one of the Boston Tea party members and one of his relatives was General Peter Gansevoort, a man famous for leading the defense against British troops during the revolution.
