Theories of Gender

Since 1965, more than 150 papers have been published devoted to the theory of gender and related issues.

Biologically-based explanations of gender differences and development are widespread. One of the most influential of these theories is evolutionary psychology, which explains the gender differentiation of heredity. Inherit origin of gender roles is analyzed through preferences in choosing sexual partners, reproductive strategies, the contribution of parents in the care of offspring, and the aggressiveness of men.

According to psychoanalytic theory, gender development in boys and girls occurs in fundamentally different ways. Sigmund Freud believed that in early childhood, both boys and girls identify themselves with the mother, but at the age of three to five years they begin to identify themselves with the parent of the same sex.

When identifying with the parent of the same sex, as the classics of psychoanalysis considered, the child completely takes over the features and characteristics of the parent of the same sex, and it is through this process the child internalizes gender-typical behavior.

Although psychoanalytic theory has had a great influence on the development of psychology, empirical evidence does not support it. Studies have not found a close link between identification with the parent of their gender and assimilation of gender roles.

Cognitive and social theories of gender development include the theories of cognitive development, gender schemes, social learning, and social-cognitive theory. Although at the initial stages, these theories were significantly different from one another, and their supporters had heated discussions, modern versions of these theories have much in common. In general, cognitive and social theories consider gender development as a complex process of interaction of biological, social, and cognitive factors. All of them pay a significant attention to the social sources of gender development and the active role played by a person in one’s own gender development.

Social sources of gender development include, in particular, the influence of parents and other significant adults and peers, as well as pressure from the news media, cinema, literature, etc.

Thus, there are several scientific theories that give different interpretations of the phenomenon of gender. Each approach has both positive and negative aspects. None of the scientific approaches presented above can give an exhaustive explanation of the nature of gender, but the cumulative knowledge of all the theories can help understand the complex processes that take place within the social system, and the gender system of a particular community.
