Sharecropping and the Debt Peonage

In the US, the famous Civil Right movement was a legal, social, and political struggle of African Americans who wanted to get their complete citizenship rights and racial equality. Basically, it’s was a challenge to any segregation and discrimination with a number of activities, including boycotts, protest marches, refusal to follow specific segregation laws. Many people believed that this movement started with the bus boycott in Montgomery in 1955 and it finished with the special act in 1965. However, there are many debates of when it really started and if has finished yet.

This important historical event was also called the Black Freedom movement, the second reconstruction, and Negro revolution. After the Civil War, there were different amendments added to the US Constitution, and they states that all black people are US citizens. They were also granted equal legal protection and rights to vote. When the slavery was cancelled, there was its new form developed in America, and it was called sharecropping. The main problem is that this Debt Peonage tied all sharecroppers to their land.

According to this system, African Americans were supposed to farm the land that belonged to white people. They were allowed to lee only around 10-15% of profits and most of them were kept into debts via their purchases at the general stores owned by landowners. This means that black people bought things on credit, and these purchases kept them in growing debts. Besides, African Americans were often sabotages once they managed to start coming out of their debts.

Jim Crow laws or Black Codes were issues to put certain limits to the movement of rights for black people and enhance their segregation. Most of them were targeted at preventing African Americans from voting, and this step was taken only because they outnumbers white people in the south, so the latter ones were afraid that blacks would take the whole control. For example, these laws included such elements as the Grandfather Clause. This law states that back people were allowed to vote only if their grandfathers were allowed to do that in 1864. This clause was very convenient for white people because no black were allowed to vote at that time.

In addition, Poll taxes were accepted for the right to vote, and they had to be paid right before voting. Their idea was to prevent African Americans from voting and expressing their opinions.
