Outside the Walled City

The struggles of outsiders offer one of the most prominent and widespread themes in American literature. Basically, these struggles may come from ethnicity, wealth, sexuality, class, and other matters, while their outcomes involve outsiders who lose this important battle with their unconquerable demons inside. They remain outsiders in the society and fall victims of their self-destruction.

This important theme can be easily found in many popular and well-known novels. For example, Sister Carrie is a prominent literary work of Theodor Dreiser and this story is full of preoccupations with social classes and wealth. This novel involves the character of Hurstwood who didn’t manage to get into the walled city because he remained outside of it until his pain became so unbearable that he decided to commit a suicide.

American literature contains many examples of characters living or staying outside the walled city. For example, readers should pay attention to The Sun Also Rises written by talented Ernest Hemingway. Robert Cohn is its main character, but he wasn’t invited into the friends’ circle created by his fellow travelers. This is what results in this emotional breakdown, and he never manages to recover from it, so Cohn remains outside the walled city too.

The Bluest Eye is a brilliant novel written by Toni Morrison, and it introduces the character of Pecola Breedlove to the audience. This small girl wants to fit in and become special so badly that she keeps asking for blue eyes only because she thinks that it can solve her problems with low self-esteem. It’s obvious that all of the above-mentioned novels contain a similar topic, which is the struggle of outsiders against the whole world. These famous and ingenious literary works describe the external struggle of people who are discriminated or can’t be understood by the rest in addition to their inner struggle that don’t have any wrong or right answer.

In conclusion, the struggles of people outside the walled city are quite widespread and complex so that they offer an interesting and controversial theme to write about to many talented authors. Another excellent example is The Devil’s Dream written by Lee Smith because the plot revolves around the same conflict. Bailey is the main character who finds himself outside the walled city and being discriminated by other people in the society.
