The Issue of Homosexuality Around The World

As the USA as well as other countries grapple with the issue of same-sex marriage, a new Pew Research Center poll finds enormous variance by region on the broader question of whether homosexuality needs to be accepted or rejected by society.

The survey of publics in up to 39 countries finds broad acceptance of homosexuality in the European Union, North America as well as much of Latin America, though equally widespread rejection in predominantly Muslim nations and also in Africa, not to mention parts of Asia and Russia. Opinion as for the acceptability of homosexuality is divided in Poland, Israel and Bolivia.

Attitudes about homosexuality have been quite stable for recent years, except South Korea, American and Canada, where the percentage telling homosexuality should be accepted by society has surged by at least 10% since 2007. These are among the major findings of a new poll by the Pew Research Center conducted in up to 39 countries among 37,653.

Besides this the survey also finds that acceptance of homosexuality appears to be particularly widespread in countries where religion is less significant in people’s lives. These are also among the wealthiest countries in the world. As for poorer countries with high levels of religiosity, there few believe that homosexuality should be accepted by society.

Age is also a crucial factor in several countries, while younger respondents turn to be more tolerant than older ones. While gender differences aren’t prevalent, in those countries where they are, females are consistently more accepting of homosexuality than males.

The view that homosexuality needs to be accepted by society dominates in most of the European Union countries polled. About three-quarters or more in Spain (88%), the Czech Republic (80%), Germany (87%), Britain (76%), France (77%) and Italy (74%) share this point of view, as do more than half in Greece (53%). The only exception in the European Union is Poland. That’s the only EU country polled where views are mixed. Up to 42% say homosexuality needs to be accepted by society and approximately 46% are assured it should be rejected.

Canadians, who already expressed tolerant views in 2007, are currently more likely to say that homosexuality needs to be accepted by society, while 80% say this, compared with 70% about six years ago. Sure, these views aren’t as upbeat as in the U.S., where a smaller majority 60% is assured that homosexuality should be officially accepted.
