The Ethics of Stem Cell Research

The latest stem cell research offers new hopes for innovative therapies, but it’s associated with many debates and controversies. Nowadays, different countries decide to regulate it in different ways because this subject is associated with divided public opinions. People should evaluate the ethical issues involved in the use of stem cells. That’s because this kind of research is associated with certain ethical or moral dilemmas.

Basically, it forces all people to choose between 2 important moral principles, including their duties to prevent or alleviate suffering and respect the values of people’s lives. When it comes to stem cell research, it’s hard to respect both of these principles at once. The main reason is that early embryos must be destroyed to get the necessary cells, and this means killing a future human life. Most supporters of this research provide their arguments, including the one that this research can result in the discovery of new and effective medical treatments that can alleviate the suffering of many serious patients. It’s difficult to decide on the moral principle that is more important in this situation, and everything depends on how people view human embryos. Do they really have the same status as people?

The moral status of embryos is also a complex and quite controversial matter, and it includes a set of basic viewpoints. First, it’s worth noting that they have their full moral status from the moment of their fertilization. The development from fertilized eggs to babies is a long and complex process, and any attempts to determine when the personhood starts are arbitrary. Many people agree that human embryos are human beings in their embryonic stage, just like children are human beings in their infant stage. Although embryos don’t have all the main characteristics of persons, they will get them so that they should be treated with the same dignity and respect.

In addition, those early embryo that are not implanted into the uterus don’t have their emotional, psychological, and physical properties that can define them as being a person. That’s why they don’t have any interests to be protected and can be used to benefit those patients who are seriously sick. The main reason is that embryos can’t develop into babies without being placed in the uterus of their mothers. These controversial debates about this research don’t seem to stop in the near future.

The latest stem cell research offers new hopes for innovative therapies, but it’s associated with many debates and controversies. Nowadays, different countries decide to regulate it in different ways because this subject is associated with divided public opinions. People should evaluate the ethical issues involved in the use of stem cells.
