To change hairstyle, job, an apartment, a circle of friends, religion, city, or country – what to do when the desire to change your life becomes irresistible? Should you change you life or better not to risk it and leave it at that?

According to psychologists, any change is more or less stress. That is why it is so hard to make a decision to change something in your life. If the thought about changes came to mind, it cannot be ignored. When a person is comfortable with everything, the desire to change something, as a rule, doesn’t appear, because it is based on the dissatisfaction with the status quo. Another thing is when acting spontaneously we expose ourselves to danger. After all, making a sharp turn, we not only gain something but also lose.

Any change is the loss of the old way of life, even if it is something you got tired of, but it is familiar and predictable. So, some time should pass from the moment when the shadow of a doubt arises till the moment it’s time to make a decision. A sudden decision that leads to the results that can’t be changed can be very dangerous. After all, when we break with the past on an emotional level, there is a high risk of relapse: attempts to make peace with a person you broke up, or return to work, which was completely dissatisfied. You need to wait until you’re ready to make changes in your life.

Experts estimated that when overcoming changes, our mind goes through several stages of adaptation:

  • Depression, or pre-mourning, when it becomes clear that the happiness that we once experienced being with this or that person, or coming every day to our favorite job, is forever lost. Memories of how we used to be happy make us sad from the realization that those times have long gone.
  • Aggression and frustration come when we are trying to shift the blame for what happened on the outer circumstances.
  • Humility comes when we understand that although now everything is not like it used to be, the life goes on.
  • Adoption and verbalization of the decision. We understand that it is no longer our life, and we are ready to accept changes.

According to experts, the only thing that we need to be feared of is being jammed in one of the stages. For example, it is hard for many people to overcome aggression.

How quickly we can get used to the changes depends on our psychological make-up and temperament. When the psyche is rigid, it may take years to accept changes. In this case it is particularly recommended to carefully weigh the pros and cons.
