Analyzing the Greed of Shylock

Shylock is one of the main characters of The Merchant of Venice, a famous literary work written by William Shakespeare. Basically, he is a greedy, mean, and money-loving Jew who shows a range of characteristics through his actions and in his everyday life. The personal traits of this character are evident in different scenes, including the one where he loans money to Antonio. Besides, readers should focus on the descriptions of his actions when his daughter decides to run away and how Shylock wants to revenge when the ships of Antonio don’t return.

This man shows his greedy and hateful nature through his attitude to Antonio when lending him money. When Antonio goes to him to borrow money for Bassonio, Shylock behaves in a very hateful manner and he is rude to this man. It’s interesting that he explains that he hates this man for being a Christian. That’s because Shylock is a Jew who detests Antonio for being a Christian.

Another basic reason why this character is so mean is that he lends money without charging interest, this resulting in reduced rates for Shylock. He says that he hates Antonio because of that and he is upset with Antonio who seems to hurt his business. His daughter is Jessica and she decides to run away with Lorenzo, but the worst part is that she steals a part of jewels and money that belong to Shylock.

When he understand that his daughter it gone, he keeps crying with anger and hatred. However, he seems to be more worried about losing his stones and money than about his own daughter. Shylock is very angry with Jessica for taking his money, but he is more concerned with his money, not about her destiny or well-being. It’s another example that explains his limitless greed.

In addition, when the ships of Antonio don’t return, Shylock can’t take his money back, and he wants to revenge him. He is a true moneylender of a Jewish origin who keeps charging high interest rates for lending his money. His greed can be analyzed after reading the whole book because it contains many examples of this negative personal trait that seems to ruin his life and make him feel angry and unhappy all the time. This well-known play includes many dramatic tools and proofs that show Shylock as a man whose reputation is quite evil and he doesn’t care about anyone and anything, except for his money. All of his actions seem to highlight this character in a worse manner than before and he is a perfect example of greed.
