The Mariner's Mission

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a great literary work that belongs to Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Basically, it conveys the audience one important message that people are responsible for their wrong actions and they will always be punished. The Mariner is the main character of this story and he is punished for betraying the nature by killing the Albatross, and his severe punishment is his misery and intense agony.

The main character finally admits his guilt and accepts his punishment, but his basic mission in this book is to survive with this burden of telling the story instead of facing his own death. However, his fate isn’t under the control of pardoning God as his agony keeps returning even after he finished telling his story. This means that his sin will never let him go, no matter how much the Mariner weeps or prays.

Besides, the role of God shouldn’t be underestimated in this famous poem written by Coleridge. After killing the Albatross, God starts punishing the Mariner for his awful crime. That’s why his ship is pushed into the silent sea where its sailors are fast stranded, and there is no wind. The worst thing is that men have no water for drinking purposes, and some slimy creatures are crawling out of the sea.

The Mariner is also punished severely for destroying the symbol of the nature, so his life is in God’s hands now. He keeps calling for God many times, but he doesn’t get any positive answer. One day, his sailors see the other ship that keeps approaching them, and they are happy to see it at first, but then it turns out that it’s inhabited by the death and other awful creatures in addition to skulls. There are other symbols used by the author in this poem to accentuate the main mission of the Mariner and his punishment. They all are important for the plot because this literary piece wouldn’t be a poem without them.

In conclusion, this poem is about the old Mariner who is telling the audience his own story about killing the Albatross. This story involves much more than just this fact because it’s about a crime and a punishment, and the key mission of the Mariner is to understand his guilt and faulty deeds. Even this realization doesn’t help him get rid of his negative emotions because his burden always remains with him. The Albatross is a major symbol in this poem too because it’s holy for Christians so that the Mariner had no right to kill this sacred bird.
