A Hero or a Zero Essay

Things Fall Apart is a talented novel written by Chinua Achebe, and Okonkwo is its main character. For many readers, he fits the right description of a hero because of his personal success and strength. However, his fight for the leadership and perfection of his village ends up with interfering with his unique chance to become a true hero and declaring him an enemy. Many readers keep wondering whether Okonkwo is a hero or a zero.

He is definitely one of the most powerful men in this village Umoufia because he is honored and feared by other people. Here, any power is obtained by earning a name in all possible ways, even if they mean fighting and wrestling. Honor becomes a less important thing when people need to keep fighting to get it. Okonkwo is a hard worker who is passionate about growing his crops and he also drives everyone around him to follow this example. That’s why he earns his prominent place as one of the most powerful men in his tribe.

Besides, a big family is a great source of people’s pride in this village. Although the wives and kids of Okonkwo don’t always please him or make him feel happy, they bring him a major source of pride (he has 3 wives and 8 children). It’s worth noting that women are bought by men to become their wives in this tribe, so when men have many wives, this means that they are quite wealthy. Big families also mean that their heads can support all of them, and the devotion of Okonkwo to his crops and family members provides him with a respect any all husbands and fathers deserve.

His culture and ability to kill and fight provides this character with even more power and influence in this tribe. However, he is a zero for some readers because one of his biggest flaws is the fear of becoming a failure. Okonkwo seems to be quite powerful, but he has a number of weak sides that prevent him to be a real hero. His father was quite a carefree and lazy man, and he is the main root of Okonkwo’s fears.

In conclusion, his name literally means stubbornness and male pride, and the author devotes many chapters and scenes to describing his masculinity. This man achieves success and recognition of his tribe, but he loses everything in the end, and the main cause of this failure is his own fears and weaknesses. That’s why all people who read Things Fall Apart are divided into 2 camps: those who believe that Okonkwo is a hero, and readers who think that he is a zero, and they all have arguments and proofs.
