The process of penetration of mathematics and biology has a long history. However, in general, it appeared in the XX century and mainly in the last 20 - 25 years. This is primarily due to the development of biology itself, its theoretical concepts. Systems of biological concepts have reached a degree of abstraction and precision at which it became possible to use mathematical models to describe biological phenomena. In addition, the structure of studied biological system was so complex that it required the development of new principles of research, which were based on some mathematical methods.
At an early stage, mathematics tried to connect with biologists with the aid of some related sciences, primarily using such types of science as mechanics and physics. In this case, the application of mathematical methods was sporadic. The most famous examples of this kind of using of mathematical methods give the works of J. Borelli (1680 - 1681) about animal movement, L. Euler (1730), J. Poiseuille (1840) and J. Stokes (1845) on hemodynamics and Helmholtz on physiological optics (1867) and acoustic (1863). These biological problems was formulated as one of the problems of mechanics or physics. Biologists from all over the world try to apply some mathematical methods in their research systematically. This method helps them to solve their fundamental problems. That is why the biological sciences began to use these methods without any intermediaries such as physic.
In our world, mathematics helps to solve various issues of biology. For example, biologists use this science as the supplementary tool, when they create some mathematical models. Creating of models is really helpful, because it helps to predict future changes in “life patterns” of different life forms. Moreover, many scientists use them to track differences in a number of populations. This knowledge helps to establish and to predict any some future changes in the development of some types of animals and plants. There is one of the sub-field of the biology – biostatistics, which use mathematic in its ordinary life too. These scientists have to refer to mathematical methods to be able to find relationships or correlations between variables. They also use them to compare some types of animals. Therefore, mathematics is really useful for biologists and these two sciences are closely connected.
