Sir Percy vs. Chauvelin from the Scarlet Pimpernel

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic adventure novel written by Baroness Emma Orczy in 1905 (based on her own play, 1903). The novel is about the British aristocracy and royalists, acting in France during the Great Terror.

The protagonist of the novel, Sir Percy Blakeney shows the effeminate dandy in everyday life, interested only in fashion and shaped tails. At the same time he is leading active underground activities against the French Revolution. The Scarlet Pimpernel is his chosen nickname. He saved a few notable French aristocrats from the guillotine and forwards them to England and rescued from the Jacobin captivity an infant heir to the French throne, Louis XVII. The cycle of novels about the Scarlet Pimpernel included more than 10 books and had been created by Baroness Orczy until the 1930s.

This novel and its sequels, written by the Baroness, popularized an avenger figure in a mask (masked avenger), which later evolved into such characters as Zorro and even Batman.

The two characters of the novel, Sir Percy Blakeney and Chauvelin, have a lot of things in common as well as things that differs them from each other. Both Sir Percy Blakeney and Chauvelin are smart and creative. For example, Percy demonstrated his creativity by overreaching Chauvelin at the Chat Gris. When Percy offered Chauvelin the snuff, it turned out to be a pepper, which was the demonstration of his creativity. Chauvelin shows his wit when he holds Armand hostage and blackmails Margueritte. Who would thing that this would make Margueritte do anything for Chauvelin?

Both Sir Percy Blakeney and Chauvelin fight for what they believe in. The only difference is that Percy is trying to liberate the aristocrats, while Chauvelin is trying to prevent them from leaving. Both characters are absolutely devoted to their job. The difference between Percy and Chauvelin is that Percy could get killed any time if Chauvelin caught him doing his job. Chauvelin himself is not a very likable man and many people would not mind seeing him dead.

Chauvelin and Sir Percy are similar in the way that they both use disguised looks in the novel. Percy disguises his look when he is trying to help out aristocrats. Percy also had many tricks. One time his disguise was of a clergyman; he used is while trying to track down the Scarlet Pimpernel. This allowed him to not be recognized by Percy, but even though Percy managed to recognize Chauvelin.

Percy and Chauvelin do not think the same things. Chauvelin usually plays dirty, while Percy follows the rules.
