Creon in Antigone and Oedipus Rex

When reading Oedipus Rex and Antigone, people will fast understand that the character called Creon serves different roles in these famous ancient plays. Basically, he is the king in Antigone while being a brother-in-law of Oedipus in Oedipus Rex. That’s because this man didn’t receive his king title until the end of Oedipus’s ruling. This means that Creon shows his fall and rise in power in both plays.

When it comes to Oedipus Rex, he seems to be a compassionate and respectful man, but his behavioral and personal changes are obvious in Antigone because he turns out to be quite disrespectful. Many of his actions make readers wonder whether this character has learned anything from his experiences in Oedipus Rex. For example, false judgements and accusations play a big role in different changes in his life in the end of Antigone.

A number of Creon’s major flaws and drawbacks is the main reason to write this tragedy. He seems to be quite cocky and let power get in the way of his family so that he ends up forgetting the true meaning of being a good and reputable king. Besides, Creon has no idea of how to handle his personal conflicts in an effective manner so that he just does everything he wants without helping others.

When reading these famous ancient plays, it’s necessary to compare the descriptions and actions of Creon in each one. His different behaviors and attitudes shouldn’t be overlooked when making this comparison to end up with valuable and strong conclusions and understand whether he can learn from his own mistakes. These famous stories were written by Sophocles, a well-known and talented Greek philosopher.

Both stories include a few quite important prophecies that should be noticed because they turn the entire plot differently than many readers may expect. These prophecies are given by Tiresias, a blind prophet accompanied with a boy who guides them everywhere. For example, in Oedipus Rex, he gives a prophecy that foreshadows future events, and it also helps Oedipus understand that he was raised by adoptive parents, not the biological ones, as it tells him that he will kill them in the reality. In addition, the prophecy given by Tiresias to Creon also plays a huge role in this story because it tells him that gods are angry with him. Sophocles wrote two incredible plays that allow reader follow the changes of Creon and his personality to the worse.
