Gene Therapy and its Potential to Cure Deafness

Today, scientists and physicians have great hopes for the use of genetic science in the invention of entirely new ways of treatment of various diseases. The potential of genetic medicine is quite high and very soon innovative genetic engineering methods can cure a range of serious illnesses that once seemed incurable. One of these pathologies is hereditary deafness. According to American scientists from Harvard University, gene therapy for the treatment of hereditary deafness may be available within five years.

The essence of the new method is that deafness often develops for genetic reasons. American specialists, who have been studying this process for more than 30 years, have managed to detect the markers of hereditary deafness. As it turned out, serious hearing disorders appear due to the genetic mutation at a certain stage of fetal development. Hearing disorders take place in more than 60 genes. Knowing the peculiarities of the impact of this gene, it is possible to offer a so-called “gene therapy” when the damaged gene is replaced with a healthy one. Thus, this method can help restore the sound function of auditory cells and improve hearing. This treatment also helps to restore the functional connectivity between the brainstem and higher cortical structures responsible for the analysis of sounds.

During the procedure, a doctor applies special genetic patches which allow the patient to partially or completely restore hearing. Scientists from Boston Children's hospital and Harvard medical school have conducted a series of medical experiments on laboratory mice. The studies have shown that revolutionary technique is able to efficiently regenerate damaged DNA, as in the course of the experiments the deaf mice restored their hearing ability. According to experts, this method can help to treat deafness of the patients who have lost hearing due to damage or disease.

Despite genetic patches are microscopic in size, they allow to change the selected mutated fragments of the gene responsible for the occurrence of deafness. Such micro-genes will allow most patients to effectively recover and partially or entirely improve their hearing. As this method is still at a very early stage of development, only further studies will make it possible to cure hearing pathologies and thus, to deal with hereditary deafness. Within the next five years the scientists plan to start the human experimenting stage.
