Discussing Hamlet's Love for Ophelia

When reading Hamlet, a famous play written by William Shakespeare, people may have specific questions as to whether the main character loves Ophelia or not. They can find many proofs arguing that he never loved her and he only tries to use her, there are still many facts that support the opposite argument. For example, Hamlet is around Ophelia when they are left alone, and this is how he shows his true feelings for her. After reading the entire tragedy, it’s easy to conclude that he is in love with her.

One of the most powerful proofs that show his love is his own works in the text. They are included by the author to describe how Hamlet confesses Ophelia in his love to her, but then he claims that he never loved her for some reasons, and the main one is that he understands that their private conversation is watched by other people. Basically, Hamlet realizes that her father Polonius keeps watching him and has some evil plants about him so that he chooses to be careful in his confessions.

Another important point in this popular story that can confirm Hamlet’s love for Ophelia is when he tells her to go to the nunnery. Some readers may think that he is just mocking her, but it’s possible that she is actually pregnant with his child. This fact seems plausible as Hamlets keep telling Ophelia many things about breeding and that it’s bad to bring a kid into the evil world. If she is really pregnant, he wants to find effective ways to help her.

However, many facts and words involved in this famous tragedy may hint that Hamlet doesn’t love her, but most of them are caused by his wish to throw everyone else off his life. This character is quite clever and he knows that other people keep watching him so that he decides to pretend that he doesn’t love Ophelia. Another interesting example of his love is the letter that he decides to send her, and this is where he writes about his feelings. This letter was just before her death, but she shows it to a father who is not trusted by Hamlet, and he must hide his true feelings trying to protect her.

Finally, another example that proves his love for Ophelia is when he realizes that she is dead. He confronts the accusations of Laertes that he never loved her and defends his true love for her. This means that he really loves her and feels very sad about losing her. Hamlet even thinks that there is nothing left to live for when she is dead, but his love is questioned throughout the entire play.
