The Concept of Dedication

Dedication is the rite of consecration of the building (room), which is a necessary condition for the possibility of holding a service (Divine Liturgy) in it. Rules of dedication go back to the 5th century, when they were reviewed and approved at the 4th (Chalcedon) Ecumenical Council and recognized by both the Orthodox and the Catholic Church.

Churches under the authority of a bishop (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or Anglican) are usually dedicated by the bishop during a ceremony that was called that of consecration, but now is called that of dedication. For the Catholic Church, the rite of dedication is described in the works Caeremoniale Episcoporum and Roman Missal’s Ritual Masses for the Dedication of an Altar and a Church. In the Church of England, a dedicated church may only be closed for worship after a legal process.

The rite of dedication of chapels and churches for Christian worship must be as old as Christianity itself. During the earlier part of the 4th century allusions there are a lot of descriptions of church dedications.

The custom is probably of Jewish origin, as we know of such dedications as Solomon’s Temple and the Second Temple by Zerubbabel, the temple of Herod the Great, and the attendance by Jesus the Feast of Dedication.

The printed service books and manuscripts of medieval church contain description of long and elaborated service for the dedication of churches. The earliest known pontifical is Egbert, Archbishop of York. The general character of the service can be found in a skeleton of it as it was done in England after the Reformation.

The foundation-stone is one of the rites used in dedication. Then there is the consecration of the altar. At first, holy water is blessed and mixed with chrism. Using this mixture the bishop makes the cross in the middle of the altar, then on the right and on the left, and then on the four horns of the altar. Then the altar is sprinkled just with holy water and the table is washed.

This order is very similar to the Roman order with only one significant difference – is the presence and use of relics at the dedication of an altar. The bishop goes to the place where the relics are kept and begins solemn procession with the relics outside the church going around it. Then there is a sermon and two decrees of the council of Trent are read. Then the bishop enters the church and puts them in the cavity of confession in the altar.

The dedication of Eastern Orthodox Church is also long and elaborate. After the construction of the building is done, there are preparations for the solemn dedication.

There is no authorized form for the dedication of a church in the reformed Church of England.
