Composition and the Principles of Design

The connection of parts into a single unit, putting various elements in a specific order to create an art form is what the composition is.

There are no certain rules and principles that would regulate the use of patterns and composition means. However, the knowledge of various examples underlying the common concepts allows in each concrete case to reach the artistic expression of the designed product.

The study of the laws of the composition itself cannot replace the live art and creative intuition. However, knowledge of these laws gives the training, without which no productive work is possible.

All the design elements of the composition are never present by themselves. They are in a certain interaction with each other, and are subject to some single idea. In order for the whole composition to look harmoniously and naturally, it is best to follow the basic principles of design.

All the principles of design must be considered and observed when creating a composition. One should learn how to see them in other people’s works and be able to describe their own work on the basis of these principles.

One of the design principles is balance, equilibrium of interacting or opposing forces in a composition. When looking at the balanced composition there is no sense that some of its parts dominate over the others. Balance can be achieved by using the correct placement of objects, sizes, and colors. Balance can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial.

The second design principle is contrast, interaction of opposing elements of the composition such as color, size, texture, etc.

The principle of importance and subordination involves the allocation of the so-called interest center, which is supposed to attract the viewer’s attention. The objects must be in the hierarchy on the importance and subordination. If all objects have the same importance, the viewer’s attention is scattered.

The principle of focus of attention is the control over the viewer’s glance while it is moving around the site to attract their attention to the important elements.

Proportion is the ratio of a separate part to the entire project, as well as the ratio of the individual parts with each other.

Scale is a real, apparent size of the object, considered in relation to other objects, people, or environment.

The principle of repetition and rhythm involves the repetition of design elements for a particular purpose, for example, to set the direction of gaze or the continuity of attention.

The principle of unity in diversity involves a combination of various elements of the composition in a single integrated structure, subordinate to a single concept.

The connection of parts into a single unit, putting various elements in a specific order to create an art form is what the composition is.

There are no certain rules and principles that would regulate the use of patterns and composition means.
