The Life and Art of Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol happened to be the superstar of the Pop Art movement. His Campbell's Soup Cans as well as Gold Marilyn Monroe made him famous around the globe, and his studio, dubbed The Factory, became a magnet for artists of the 1960s counterculture.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1928, Andy Warhol later became known as a successful magazine as well as ad illustrator. His name is still associated with the 1960s Pop art movements. Andy ventured into a wide range of art forms, such as filmmaking, performance art, video installations, writing, and also blurred the lines between mainstream aesthetics and fine art. He passed away on February 22, 1987, New York City.

His parents gave birth to him in the neighborhood of Oakland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They were Slovakian immigrants. Andy’s dad, Ondrej Warhola, served as a construction worker, while his mom, Julia Warhola appeared to be an embroiderer. Being Byzantine Catholics, they were used to attending mass all the time. The parents maintained much of their Slovakian culture as well as heritage when living in one of Pittsburgh's Eastern European ethnic enclaves.

Aged 8, Andy contracted Chorea, also dubbed as St. Vitus's Dance. It’s a rare and in some cases fatal illness of the nervous system. That health disorder left him bedridden for several months. When staying in bed sick, he took his first drawing lessons from his mother. By the way, she was a talented artist. Gradually drawing turned to be Andy’s favorite childhood pastime. Additionally, Andy was a faithful fan of the movies, and when his mom purchased him a camera at the age of 9 he took up photography too.

Warhol attended Holmes Elementary school. In addition to this, he took free art classes provided at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Aged 14, in 1942, Andy Warhol suffered a tragedy once again, when his dad died from a jaundiced liver. That death greatly upset Warhol. He was even unable to attend his dad’s funeral, so he simply hid under his bed throughout the wake. Andy’s dad had recognized his son's artistic talents, and his last will stated that his life savings should go directly toward Warhol's college education. The same year, Andy Warhol started attending Schenley High School, and having graduated, in 1945, Andy enrolled at the Carnegie Institute for Technology in order to study pictorial design.

Having graduated from college with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1949, Andy moved to New York for the purpose of pursuing a career as a commercial artist.
