Introduction to the United Arab Emirates. At first, we should mention that the UAE is a really advanced country with quite high level of life for its citizens. The UAE is situated in the Southeast of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. This country contains seven emirates. By the way an emirate is a territory ruled by an emir. An emir is an Arab commander or prince of Islamic faith. Here are the names of emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. The capital of the UAE is Abu Dhabi and the largest city is Dubai. The biggest emirate Abu Dhabi comprises more than three-fourths of all area. Abu Dhabi is the center of oil industry and borders with Saudi Arabia. Oil industry is the most important industry in the UAE that brings a lot of money. The city of Dubai is one of the region’s most vital commercial and financial centers. It is also well-known for its skyscrapers.
So lets us give a brief history of this exciting country. The European intervention began in early 16thcentury. The Portuguese settlers occupied the country. They were quite successful and ruled the country for over than 150 years. So the Ottoman empire was the next but the last one to occupy the country. Britain thought that this region was some kind of the “Pirate Coast” because of harassments of shipping industries by the raiders. Afterwards the “Trucial Sheikdoms” was created. In 1971 six of the seven Trucial States announced their unification as the United Arab Emirates. The seventh sheikhdom Ras al-Khaimah joined to the UAE in 1972.
