The American Transcendental Movement

American transcendentalism was an essential movement in such fields as literature and philosophy that was developed in the 19th century. Basically, it started as the reform movement in the Unitarian church and extended the views of Channing on the indwelling God and the importance of intuitive thinking. It was based on the monism holding to the world’s unity and God. For all transcendentalists, the souls of all people were identical with the soul of the entire world and contained the same as the world contained.

They also rejected Lockean empiricism, and unlike Unitarians, they wanted to rejuvenate the main mystical aspects of Calvinism in New England. Their other goals were going back to the divine and supernatural light of Jonathan Edwards imparted to the soul by God’s spirit. This important movement shaped the direction of American literature considerably, although not in the ways it intended. For example, many writers were inspired by Thoreau and Emerson and they struck out in completely new directions due to their philosophical and literary lessons.

The poetic direction of Emily Dickinson was very different, but she also belonged to the thoughtful readers of Fuller and Emerson. In his unique way, Frederick Douglass incorporated a number of transcendental thinking lessons from Emerson. There were other notable writers who decided to take their direction away from this movement, and they were more focused on realism or negative romanticism. Such famous authors as Hawthorne, Melville, and Poe found their own creative ways to object different aspects of transcendental writers, even as they incorporated others. Only a few American writers were free if the major influence of Thoreau and Emerson, both in their imitations and reactions.

In conclusion, nature writing was the most visible and important manifestation of transcendental ideas and forms, and this literary genre is still developing. Its roots are in Nature written by Emerson and Walden of Thoreau. The American transcendentalism movement is the practice where the world of facts and common sense categories are exchanged temporary for the world of imagination categories and ideas. The main point of this kind of exchange is to make people’s life better by lifting them above different struggles and conflicts. Thoreau and Emerson are the most prominent followers and developers of this movement.
