An Essay on Chan

Basically, the idea of Chan Buddhism is based on the concept that people’s experiences are beyond words, and this religious theory had a lasting and major impact on China in general. It integrates the idea of Daoism and early Buddhism and it also reflects the important role of the non-idealistic nature where people’s mind is prominent over using any language.

This short essay will try to answer a number of important questions related to this religion. How does the approach of Hu Shih to Chan differ from the one of Suzuki? Why is the scholarship of Japanese on Zen not so objective? What does theological fallacy mean? Why are such alternative approaches as hermeneutics and structural analysis important?

To understand how the approach of Hu Shih is different from the one offered by Suzuki, people should comprehend that Hu Shih was focused on the historicism of Chan, and this means that he is interested in all kinds of historical aspects, while Suzuki prefers the metaphysical aspect of Chan. He also states that all people who can talk about Zen can be divided into 2 basic types. The first one is just like Suzuki who has quite a firm grasp on important concepts and a deep understanding of Zen. The second one is like Hu Shin who literally can’t grasp these concepts.

Besides, Suzuki states that people like Hu Shih may know Zen from its historical point of view, but they have no idea about its true nature. The main reason is that talking about Zen has nothing to do with its ideas. While Hu Shin argues that its historical approach can’t be underestimated because of specific circumstances involved in its emergence and how it transmits this situation into a tool of understanding. It’s worth noting that Hu Shin belongs to the academic world, and that’s why his personal approach to Zen is so factual.

In addition, Suzuki belongs to Buddhist institutions, so he is more dependent on the main teaching of Buddhism and its specific mysticism. Hu Shin sees Chan as a key result of Chinese politics, culture, and philosophy, while Suzuki has different opinions, but they both agree that Chan is all about the practical Chinese way of thinking. There are many other opinions and approaches involved in Chan Buddhism, and they all should be analyzed by students interested in this theme, especially if they want to achieve their academic success or craft a good essay about Chan and its concepts.
