Into the Wild – Chris McCandless

Christopher Johnson McCandless was an American traveler, who took the name Alexander Supertramp in the course of his wanderings. He went to an uninhabited part of Alaska with little food stocks and equipment in the hope to live for a while in seclusion. He died four months later of starvation near Denali National Park.

The American writer Jon Krakauer inspired by the details of the story that led Christopher to Alaska, wrote about his adventures in a book published in 1996 and titled Into the Wild. In 2007, Sean Penn directed the film of the same name, in which the role of McCandless was played by Emile Hirsch.

When writing the story, Krakauer tries to answer why McCandless do it. It is impossible to find an answer to the question no matter how hard Krakauer pursues it.

In the introduction Krakauer acknowledges his own obsession. In the book, he showed the last two years of McCandless’s life. The book tells about how Christopher McCandless, a young man from a wealthy family, have renounced the material values of modern society, transferred all his money to charity, and became a hobo. For two years (1990 and 1992) under the name of Alexander Supertramp, he traveled around the US and Mexico, earned money doing odd jobs, met different people, who changed his life, until, finally, he was in Alaska... where he committed the final act of self-denial, he settled in the harsh desert in an old bus.

Here McCandless began implementing his plan. He had a bag of 4.5 kg of rice, a semi-automatic rifle Remington, a textbook on for plants, a few books, and some of the equipment. He wanted to survive using plants and hunting for prey. Once he killed a moose, but was unable to properly prepare the meat, and it was ruined.

His diary contains entries for a total of 189 days. They describe a wide variety of experience, from enthusiastic to gloomy, depending on the progress in survival. In July, after several months of life in the wild, he decided to return to civilization, but discovered that way back turned out to be blocked by the river.

The book addresses the issues of how to be accepted into society, and how finding one’s personality can sometimes conflict with being an active member of society. Many critics agree that Chris McCandless left to find some kind of enlightenment. He tried to find his way in wild nature having with minimal material possessions, because it made the journey more enjoyable. His extreme risk-taking was the arrogance, which eventually led to him to death.

McCandless was influenced by transcendentalism and the need to revolutionize life and move into an entirely new realm of experience.

I gave the writer very little time to complete a four page History paper. After he completed it, I realized it was to be single spaced, not double.
