The World of 1984

An outstanding example of people’s dystopian future was created by George Orwell in his famous novel 1984. The main character is Winston Smith who is the outer member of the party who keeps working in the Ministry of Truth in its records department. Basically, his work is all about rewriting the past according to the present, but he is not like other people in Oceania.

The main reason is that Winston hates the party and Big Brother secretly. He also has a love affair with Julia, another outer member of the party. They meet in a room above one old antique shop whose owner is Mr. Charrington. O’Brien is another important character who is the inner member of the party who feels the discontent of Winston. That’s why he invites him to his house and asks if he wanted to become a member of the so-called Brotherhood, which is an underground organization that is targeted at brining Big Brother down.

One day, Julia and Winston are in their room in the antique shop when the police arrest them for becoming thought criminals. Smith is taken to the scary Ministry of Love where he is interrogated. He also finds out that O’Brien is someone who supports the party and sets him up. O’Brien explains to Winston that his main goal is to make him love the party and Big Brother and he succeeded to achieve it in the end.

In this famous novel, the author foresaw public surveillance and tendency to willingly give up people’s right to privacy because of fears, but he incorrectly predicted that the government would try to break the ties that citizens had with their relatives and each other. It’s true that George Orwell imagined the system of public surveillance where all citizens didn’t have their own privacy both in their houses and in public.

In conclusion, after reading this interesting book, you will understand that the world of 1984 has certain similarities with the modern world. It’s much harsher for people, but this is what makes readers wonder how human lives will be over time. 1984 has special telescreens and microphones to hear and see everyone so that the government lurks in every corner. Hopefully, this world will never be like that in the reality. Telescreens created by Orwell watched all people to ensure that they obeyed the laws of the party. If someone breaks these laws, this person is taken to the Ministry of Love to be tortured and healed of different opinions and thoughts. The world described in 1984 keeps terrifying readers and reminds many important subjects.
