Traitor in The Defector Episode of Star Trek

The defector is the episode of Star Trek that mainly focuses on the treason of Admiral Jarok. Almost any kind of military activities include the situations when people desert to the enemy. They are driven by various reasons, at times even noble and humanistic; still, such people will be always flagellated as traitors.

The title of the episode at the very start indicates the dilemma of treason. By figuring out the terms “a traitor “and “defector”, we can clear up who Jarock was in deed and not in name.

A defector is a person who consciously joins another side basing on his ideological reasons. This term is widely used in the political circles to describe those who become ideologically motivated against the policy of the county they serve but still remain faithful to the motherland.

A traitor has a bit different definition which means that a person knowingly harms the interests of his country. Thus, he helps the enemy score a victory over his native land. There is a slight but meaningful difference between these notions which will help to prove that Admiral Jarock is rather a traitor than a defector. Despite Admiral shows his love for the state he belongs to and cares about people living there, he is personally motivated to betray them. In fact, betrayal is a crime committed against the policy of the government. People betray for fame, money, love, or ideology. Admiral Jarok's words about his country are filled with nostalgia for Romulan nature. He also supports some governmental actions in the war. Thus, we cannot call him a defector as this notion implies complete resentment of the country interests and ideas. The Federation receives secret information about the Romulans’ military plans from Jarok. He attempts to justify himself by saying that he does not want his daughter live amidst the war. These words prove the fact that Admiral is driven by personal reasons. It is pretty obvious that he is a traitor.

One more argument to make sure that Jarok is a traitor is his suicide. He chooses to die as he understands he will not be able to live in another place and serve the enemy that intends to ruin his native land. He feels homesick but there is no way to remedy the situation. Admiral knows that the Romulan government will not let him back, but even worse that he will never see his family. Despite he acted out of necessity, as he personally thought, Admiral Jarok is an exile, an outlaw and a traitor for both opposing governments. This is a tragedy of Admiral that is why he decides to pass away as the burden of a traitor is too heavy.
