The Two Main Character in Medea Play

One of the great tragedies of Euripides is Medea. The two main characters in the play are Medea and Jason.

The plot of this drama is based on the myth about the Argonauts. Enchantress Medea is the daughter of the king of Colchis and a granddaughter of the Sun. She fell in love with Jason, one of the Argonauts, who came to Colchis for the Golden Fleece. Jason is the son of the king of Yolk Aeson and Polymedia. He is also a hero and participant of Calydonian boar, the leader of the Argonauts, who traveled on the ship Argo to Colchis for the Golden Fleece. This task was given to him by a half-brother of his father, Pelias, to destroy him.

For the sake of a loved one, Medea left the family home, helped him steal the Golden Fleece from her father, committed a crime, and came with him to Greece. To her horror, Medea discovers that Jason wants to leave her and marry the princess, heir to the throne of the Corinthian. It is particularly difficult for her, because she is a barbarian, living in a foreign country where there is no family and friends. Medea is outraged with deft sophistic arguments of her husband, who tries to convince her that he marries the princess for the sake of their young sons, heirs of the kingdom. Medea is insulted and understands that the driving force behind her husband’s behavior is the pursuit of wealth and power.

Medea wants to revenge Jason, who mercilessly smashed her life, and destroys her opponent, sending her a poisoned outfit with her children. She decides to kill the children as well for the sake of their happiness which, according to Jason, the reason he enters into a marriage.

Medea, trampling morality, commits a crime, considering that a person can do as personal commitment and passion dictates. In Euripides tragedy it is a reflection of sophistical theory that a man is the measure of all things.

Euripides showed a storm of anguish in the soul of Medea, who has planned to kill the children. Medea fights with two emotions: jealousy and love for children, a passion and a sense of duty to the children. Jealousy tells to kill children and revenge her husband, while love for children makes her decline a terrible decision and to flee from Corinth with children. This painful struggle between duty and passion is the culminating point of the whole chorus of the tragedy. Medea caressing children decides to keep them alive and go into exile. But in a minute she changes her mind again and realizes that the tragedy is inevitable.

Euripides reveals the human soul, tormented by inner struggle between duty and passion. Analyzing this tragic conflict, the great playwright shows how passion can get the better of attachments, thereby destroying the human person.
