The Importance of Motivation in Sports

The motivation of the athlete plays one of the most important roles in achieving results. Only it does not mean that the more motivated the athlete is, the more productive he or she is. One shouldn’t also think that in order to achieve a goal one needs to have the highest level of motivation.

Motivation is the internal impetus to achieve the goal. The motivation differs from the stimulus by the fact that the motivation comes from within. Impetus comes from the outside and can be a movement for motivation. For example, an athlete dreams about the award, and he or she imagines it in mind. The award is an impetus, and its representation in the mind is motivation. Without proper motivation and stimulation an athlete won’t be able to properly follow the instructions of the coach. They won’t be able to train to become a master. Without mastery one can’t achieve good results, therefore motivation is necessary for an athlete, but the degree of motivation should not exceed a certain value.

The highest motivation increases the level of fear and anxiety before a performance. Excessive effort leads to poor results for some athletes, but there are situations that require maximum motivation of an athlete. Furthermore, there is the concept of the optimal level of motivation, which depends not only on the athlete, but also on the type of sport. Maximum motivation is needed in sports that require great endurance and speed of reaction. At the same time, high motivation can interfere in those sports where clearly coordinated movement is required.

The impetus for motivation of the athlete is the competition. It is known that during the competition the athlete tries to achieve highest results. In addition to the competition, a good motivation for an athlete is praise from a coach for the athlete’s achievements. For example, an athlete improved his personal record, and coach thanked him for competent performance and a great result. Motivation means are not limited to praise and competitions; they can be strictly individual for everyone and only their proper selection by coach can help the athlete reach the desired success. Also, the stimulus may become a form of internal impetus provided the stimulus is a necessity. In other words, the impetus and motive can help a person realize their potential.

Effective motivation is what ta competent person sets as an aim for an athlete. Ineffective motivation can be the phrase ‘try to do everything possible’, because competent person puts a competent and clear task. If a goal is more specific than ‘do what you can’, then the motivation of an athlete becomes more efficient, while the goal becomes more attainable.
