Huck and Tom

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are the characters of the novels by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. They are twelve-year-old boys, the residents of a small provincial American town of St. Petersburg, mates of plays and games that are created by their irrepressible imagination.

Tom Sawyer is an orphan. He was brought up by the sister of his late mother, a pious aunt Polly. The boy is completely uninterested in life that flows around him, but he is forced to comply with the general rules: go to school, attend church services on Sundays, to be neatly dressed, to behave at the table, and go to bed early, although he breaks the rules now and then, causing indignation of his Aunt. Tom is very enterprising and cunning.

Tom’s essence is in playing tricks and coming up with something unusual. He reads a lot and wants to make his life as bright as the one of the heroes in novels. He embarks on love affairs, arranges games with the Indians, pirates, and robbers. Tom is a charming man, but he is a child of his time, his city, and often leads a double life. When necessary, he is quite able to take the image of a boy from a good family, knowing that everybody else does that.

Quite different is the case with his close friend, Huck Finn. Huck is the son of the local drunk, who doesn’t care about the child. Nobody forces Huck to go to school. He completely belongs to himself. The boy alien to pretense and all the conventions of civilized life are unbearable for him. The main thing for Huck is to be free, always and everywhere.

Huck is certainly attracted with entertaining games invented by Tom, but his personal freedom and independence is the most important for him. After losing them, he does not feel at ease, and in order to regain them, Huck in the second novel is taking a dangerous journey, forever leaving his hometown.

In gratitude for saving from the vengeance of the Injun Joe widow Douglas took Huck to educate him. Servants washed him, combed his hair, every night he was sleeping on clean sheets. He had to eat with a knife and a fork, and go to church. Unfortunate Huck survived only three weeks in such an environment, and disappeared.

Tom manages to outwit the ingenuous Huck and returns him for a while to the widow. Then Huck mystifies his own death. He himself sits down in the canoe and drifts away. During the journey Huck experiences a lot of adventures, showing resourcefulness and ingenuity, but not out of boredom and desire to have fun, as before, but because of the vital need, first and foremost for the sake of runaway black man Jim. The ability to think about others makes Huck a particularly attractive. Perhaps that is why Mark Twain himself saw him as a hero of the 20th century.
