The Cajun Mardi Gras Masks

Mardi Gras is celebrated on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and before the beginning of Catholic Lent, the last day of the carnival.

The name is spread mainly in French-speaking countries and regions. It is celebrated in many countries of Europe, in the US and in other countries. The most massive and lavish celebrations are held in New Orleans.

The tradition of Mardi Gras dates back to pre-Christian pagan rites: farewell of winter and meeting of spring, the election of the king and queen of the festival, burning of totem puppets, eating solar symbols, and so on.

In the US, the French name Mardi Gras is more common. Initially it was a costume show on the occasion of the meeting of spring in the French Quarter of New Orleans that caused the curiosity of onlookers. Over the years, the carnival became more crowded, there were bright colored platforms, driven by horses.

The day-long celebration is something where the whole Cajun culture participates. Contrary to a popular belief, the real Mardi Gras is not held only in New Orleans with a huge parade and everybody watching and of course, splendid parties. The main difference between the celebrations in New Orleans is the size. The event is visited by more than a hundred thousand people, who come to see a parade.

In Cajun Mardi Gras, the parade is bigger and comes to the audience. This means that the parade goes from house to house providing each family with a private show. The parade made up of beggars and game players, the Mardi Gras, as they are called separately, organize a lively party for their audience. The central theme of the show in New Orleans is a parade through the middle of the city, while the theme of the Cajun carnival is individual house visits. Basically, in New Orleans, people go to see Mardi Gras, while with the Cajun, Mardi Gras comes to visit you.

There are also differences in clothing. In New Orleans, people use some common colors like purple, green, and gold. They show liturgical banners used by the Catholic Church to note the Lent season. The colors can be seen all over the costumes, streamers, balloons, and masks. In terms of masks, the New Orleans Mardi Gras applies a half-face mask.

All of these aspects are different at the Cajun Mardi Gras. The costumes mock the nobility, the clergy and the educated; people wear miter hats, mortarboards and capuchons, which were initially created to mock the tall pointy hats worn by noble women.

Cajun Mardi Gras masks are made of ordinary wire mesh window screen with attachment of large protruding noses and painted eyes and mouths. The masks are almost seen through. Many masks and costumes include animal features like feathers, beaks, fur, or tails.
