William Somerset Maugham's Autobiographical Novel Of Human Bondage

# William Somerset Maugham's Autobiographical Novel Of Human Bondage is a story of personal development on the way to happiness.

The depth of dramatic conflict determines the structure of Maugham's novels, which constitute a significant part of his literary heritage. Inherently "Of Human Bondage" is a novel about education, self-improvement and the entry of the hero in life. The author smoothly depicts a person’s way from childhood to adolescence, then to youth and maturity.

Philip Carey, the main character, deeply suffers from the very beginning of his life. Orphaned early, he was deprived of love, care and affection. His path is marked with important events and is full of discoveries. The hero does his soul-searching, learns people and sees the life. Philip solves new problems, makes choices and conclusions.

Maugham endeavors to show that a man is driven by his own passions and desires but he does not know the reasons for his instincts. And because they are hidden from him, his misery is aggravated. Only yielding to reason and useful activities can liberate a man from slavery. Philip Carey treads a thorny path to learning this truth. He thinks of becoming a painter, but this dream will not come true. Along with it, his relationships with women are deeply painful and ambiguous, especially the relationship with Mildred full of pain, grief and despair.

Carey decides to become a doctor. Helping people, he gains long-awaited freedom. However, is not the cause of liberation from slavery, the main point is that he makes the wisdom from every important event of his life. He is always anxious about the sense of life, seeking for new aims and discovering many other philosophical and moral issues. His soul is torn to pieces by the fact that he is unhappy, but nevertheless, all his failures help him to mould as a personality. Henceforth, Cary does not measure the life by only happiness; he knows there are other measurements. Bitter moments are also worthwhile. On realizing it, Carey is able to go forward, and each event weaves his thread into the pattern of his life. He is glad of it, and like an artist hopes to finish his canvas by the end of life. Thus, painting a picture of his life, Philip feels happy.

Maugham believes that a man becomes truly happy after he understands that the pattern of his life is unbedizened – the birth, work, marriage, family and children, death. Only realizing this simple truth, a man can be freed from many illusions and suffering. This is the thing that helps him to live.
