The Quality of the Air We Breathe

The air, we breathe in cities and indoors, is a terrible cocktail of industrial emissions, car exhaust, fragrances of dumps, dust, tobacco smoke, and other toxic substances, as well as bacteria and viruses.

The World Health Organization has concluded that the air in homes and offices is several times dirtier and 8-10 times more toxic than outdoor air and this shortens our life by 10-15 years. Carbon monoxide, phenol, formaldehyde, ammonia, benzene, acetone, hydrogen sulfide, aerosols, fine dust, etc. are especially dangerous to the lungs. The products of combustion from the gas burner are mixed with the noxious fumes from synthetic materials that surround us. Linoleum, chipboard, parquet lacquer, asbestos walls, plastic, and mastic emit toxic substances that accumulate in our apartments. In addition, especially in winter, the air in the apartment is very dry, which is also harmful for lungs.

There is a direct correlation between air quality and a variety of diseases. City resident that spends most of life indoors usually suffers from diseases of the upper respiratory tract infections and the cardiovascular system. Constant headaches, fatigue, insomnia, and even stress and cancer of the respiratory system also depends on the air quality. Doctors have identified a particular disease – a syndrome of enclosed spaces. Stuffy nose, dry throat, cough, rhinitis, headache, irritability are just some of its symptoms. They are most clearly manifested in rooms with artificial air conditioning.

Remember how easy and pleasant it is to breathe in the woods, away from roads and factories or on the beach. There, the air is not just clean; it is also filled with aromas of plants and trees, moist, saturated with beneficial negative ions that are good for all systems of the body.

At any time of the year it is necessary to regularly, several times a day, ventilate the room, especially in the morning and before going to bed, as well as during cooking. It is very useful to sleep with an open window even in winter. To humidify the air you can put the dish under the radiator with water. Slow steaming will eliminate the excessive dryness of the air. You can also add summer grass, flowers, leaves, and pine needles to the water. Emissions of volatile substances have a beneficial effect on health. Resinous smell of pine needles purifies the air and the respiratory tract from bacteria.

In a house or apartment you can arrange a green oasis of indoor plants, which have an effective ability to clean the air of harmful substances. You may also want to put air purifiers that do an excellent job.
