Overview of the Life of Wilfred Edward Salter Owen

Wilfred Edward Salter Owen was English poet, whose work in the highest degree influenced the poetry of 1930s.

After spending a few weeks at University College of Reading, Owen in 1912 dropped out of studies due to illness and went to France, where in 1913 he became a private teacher in Bordeaux. In 1915, under the influence of propaganda he returned to England and went to volunteer in the infantry. After getting a junior officer rank in 1916, he served as a commander of the company on the French front. In 1917, after being wounded he returned home.

At the military hospital at Edinburgh he met Siegfried Sassoon, an outstanding poet, whose sharply anti-war poetry has gained fame. Communication with Sassoon contributed to the rapid flowering of poetic gift of Owen. In August 1918, he returned to the front and won the Order of Military Cross for his courage. Owen was killed in the breakout of German positions on the Sambre-Oise Canal by British soldiers on November 4, 1918, exactly one week before the war ended.

The collection of his poems, compiled by Sassoon, was published in 1920. The most famous poem was the anti-war poem Dulce Et Decorum Est. According to Sassoon, Owen learned how to create poetry from the reality of horror and cursing.

Owen hated war very much. Owen’s poetry theme, horror and pity of war, is formulated in a strong verse, which somewhat transformed the traditional size. The desire to convey to readers the terrible truth of trench warfare overcame his youthful romanticism and helped create strong and inspired poems, in which social protest is combined with great compassion for a man.

Recognition to Owen came posthumously: only four of his poems were published during his lifetime. His first collection of poetry was issued only in December 1920.

Owen had the integrity of artistic vision. In his poems he demonstrated the ability to use a simple, colloquial language; he spoke out against the grandiloquence English poetry of 90s of the 19th century. He also introduced the consonant rhyme, based on the coincidence of consonants. The particular strength of Owen’s poems is that he made the leap from prematurity caused by the experience of war to the rich poetic tradition of Keats. Connection with this tradition manifests itself in the frankly sensual perception of life and death, in conjunction of the philosophic content with the plasticity of the image, and in combination of simplicity of vocabulary and metaphors.

Undoubted popularity was brought to the poet by the fact that the fragments of his Poem of the Dead were used by English composer Benjamin Britten in his War Requiem.
