Are We Too Urban

Big cities are one of the characteristic features of human progress as there is much higher labour productivity, better use of material and spiritual resources, well developed cultural life, science and education. Therefore, large cities grow faster than other urban settlements. For the first time in the history of mankind, more than half of the world population lives in the cities. Taking all things together, it allows us to admit that urbanisation is changing our world.

Urbanisation has many positive sides. Thus, cities are the main drivers of economic development, the source of innovation and new opportunities. Cities have a nigh-on magnetic for high-skilled and well-educated workers. They provide immigrants with an opportunity to start a new life. The city is the centre of business and trade of goods and services. They arrange substantial infrastructure assets and major institutions that ensure the regional prosperity and quality of life.

However, along with the advantages, urbanisation leads to such problems as the overload of physical infrastructure, reduction of budgetary security of cities and the depletion of natural resources. It is necessary to highlight the environmental problems, namely air pollution, destruction of natural areas and the biosphere. The high pace of the city life leads to increasing stress and consuming junk food, which affects the rise in the incidence of infectious, cardiovascular diseases and disorders of the nervous system. Most big cities have a high crime rate. Also, there often occur the conflicts on religious, political and ethnic grounds. Fast-growing urban population faces a problem of unemployment, lack of infrastructure and transportation problems.

Everyone who chooses the urban life should consider all of these issues. To balance the positive and negative aspects of the mass urbanisation, the government institutions need to establish flexible and efficient development programs. More often, in this case, municipal authorities are turning to the concept of "a smart city", which involves the introduction of new information and communication technologies. The problem analysis and other data will help to develop strategies to improve the efficiency property management service, reduce energy consumption, optimise waste management and use of renewable energy sources. Obviously, there is no perfect model, for that reason, each community can develop a strategy for success based on their own history and objectives.
