My Inner Shrimp Essay Analysis

The essay "My Inner Shrimp" by Garry Trudeau, deals with the problem of a teenage self-perception. The main idea is to show what it is like for a boy in adolescence to be different.

Garry feels uncomfortable with his short stature and tells that high school students bully him for he is not like all the other “normal” students. He is preoccupied with the idea that everything he wants is to grow higher. He says that his shortness is the reason of his poor social life. Moreover, there is no chance for those like him to achieve good results in the athletics class. Garry emphasizes the fact that teenagers with physical drawbacks are very feeble.

To achieve these objectives, the author uses such strategies as plot, conflict, pace and a range of stylistic devices and detailed description. The conflict or a problem is that a boy is very short. The plot is about the man who recollects about his studies at high school. The pace of narration is standard except for the parts where the school is described. The essay includes plenty of detailed description of the boy's concerns about his height. A reader is introduced with the problem in the middle of the story. Thus, the author uses flashback as a tool to switch to a previous or current period of his life. The concluding part is when Garry attends a reunion party. Among stylistic methods, we can find metaphors, similes, repetitions and a hyperbole. Garry uses a hyperbole saying that he is a shrimp to show the lowest level of his self-esteem.

The problem of height is a rather common one among teenagers of both sexes. Some want to be higher while others dream to look shorter. A lot of teens suffer from humiliation and frequent jests about their appearance. Often they look for weighty arguments why they need to be higher or shorter. In fact, those who are too sensitive about their weak point can be laid low by depression. In the worst case scenario teenagers have to leave school for better treatment or live with the inferiority complex for the rest of their life.

It is just the case of Garry who has not got rid of his complex even when he grew higher. He mentions that he is doomed to feel small forever. It is a stunning thing that he still perceives himself as a midget living with a permanent fear to be hurt or laughed at. One must note that it is the main conflict of the story that has remained unresolved up till the moment. It is crucial to help teens at the very start of their troubles as very often they are not able to overcome the difficulty by themselves.
