Gender and Sexuality in the Film Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is a famous movie that is set in 1963 when the Vietnam War was just a threat and John Kennedy was a president. Basically, it’s a cult girly filming project and traditional romance that was launched in 1987. There are different attempts to represent the period in which its setting was, but pay attention to those clear indications that this movie has a modern make.

You are not wrong if you call this film something about romance and dancing in its genre. Its basic target is to demythologize the idea of the American dream because it portrays fundamental rifts within the thinking of any society. Keep in mind that the idea of relationships that takes place between upper classes and workers is not new. There are many major issues raised by this famous movie and they include a deep argument about the moral ideas posed by sexuality and gender.

Dirty Dancing opens with a wonderful sound track and suggestive images in white and black gyrating on the screen. From the first scenes, people can get an idea why this movie is called this way. It’s clear that most dancers are heterosexual and young couples so that everyone seems to be equal in roles when dancing. Besides, there is no swapping of partners so that all couples are set with their partners.

The main action starts when a Cadillac drives along an empty road and a voice explains the time period and the name of a major character. This young girl is called Baby and her key wish is to find a man who is just like her father. It’s easy to compare this idea with the Freudian theory of the so-called Electra complex. That’s because Freud describes how women need to reject their dominant father to move onto the other man, and this is what happens in this movie. There are other characters that intercept Baby too.

Dirty Dancing is a cult film that features many amazing scenes between the main characters played by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. It’s not a secret that this romantic movie that captures the heart of any woman. Baby is young and idealistically innocent and she is looking forward to spending the rest of the summer with her family in the place full of games, fun, and other entertainments.

Baby is curious and bored so that she stumbles upon one private dance party with professional instructors. This is where people dance dirty dances and Baby meets Johnny. This experience is something unique and new so that it starts her transformation into womanhood.
