Happy New Years

The tradition of celebrating the New Year came to the United States in the 17th century. Dutch settlers were the first who brought this custom to the new continent, and this tradition has gradually spread throughout the country.

New Year is a public holiday in the US, so January 1st is a day off (at least for most Americans); even the schedule of public transport undergoes major changes.

One of the most famous and crowded places to celebrate the New Year in the US is, of course, Times Square in New York City; for more than a hundred years, thousands of people celebrate the coming of the New Year there. A huge balloon illuminated with a laser slowly descends from the top of the tower, starting its way down one minute prior to the start of the New Year and stopping at midnight. Famous The New York Times gave the square not only its modern name, but also this tradition, preserved for decades; the owner of the paper invented this tradition with the ball in 1908. Today, when the ceremony of meeting the New Year in Times Square is broadcasted around the world, a billion people enjoy the spectacle every year.

All kinds of parades and carnivals are also very common during the New Year. One of the most famous ones is the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, which became an integral part of the New Year. After the parade, a football match among college teams in the Rose Bowl stadium is held. This tradition is more than a hundred years old.

As in many other countries, in America, champagne is a popular drink during the celebration of the New Year. In addition, it is believed that such foods as pork, rice, and greens should bring prosperity in the New Year. In the south of the country, an African dish called Hoppin’ John is considered to be traditional – it consists of beans, rice, and greens.

One of the most popular Christmas songs in the United States is Auld Lang Syne, the good old days. Lyrics were written at the end of the 18th century by Scottish poet Robert Burns, and the authorship of the song is likely rooted in the distant history of Scotland. It is believed that Guy Lombardo and his band The Royal Canadians made this song very popular in the United States. The band played the song in December 1929 during New Year’s celebrations in one of the hotels in New York. The broadcast of the song on the radio quickly make a song one of the symbols of New Year.

Of course, a decorated Christmas tree is an essential feature of the holiday. One of the most famous Christmas trees in the United States is set at Rockefeller Plaza in New York.

As well as anywhere around the world, the Americans give promises that should have a positive impact on their lives in the upcoming New Year.
