The Consequences of Drinking and Driving

Alcohol is often the cause of many unpleasant consequences for the person, and we are talking not only about health consequences of a driver, but also about the safety of others. For those who have used a certain dose of alcohol, there are some limitations, adhering which will help to avoid bad consequences.

Drinking and driving is a serious offense in most countries. Punishment varies from country to country. In some countries it depends on the degree of excess alcohol regulations in the blood, time or age of the driver, and even the type of a vehicle (for example, a drunk driver of the bus will be punished much more severely than a drunk driver of a simple car). Also, the punishment is much more severe, if as a result of driving there were victims. The penalty may consist of a fine combined with imprisonment (for example, in France).

In many countries, the control of the boat, airplane, horse riding and cycling are also prohibited in the state of alcoholic intoxication.

Alcohol is a major cause of serious road accidents. Many countries are seeking to reduce the number of accidents, tightening penalties and encouraging drivers to give up alcohol before the trip. In the US, a project A Sober Driver is very popular.

In the US, each state determines its maximum allowable rate of alcohol for drivers over 21 years old, younger than 21 years old and commercial traffic drivers. For drivers over 21 years old, in all states the rate of 0.8 ppm of alcohol is permissible. Some states prohibit drivers under the age of 21 and drivers of commercial traffic to have alcohol at all.

The punishment for drinking and driving is different from state to state, but in all states the first or the second detention is considered a relatively easy offense (misdemeanor) and is usually punished by a fine or imprisonment for up to 10 days. The third and subsequent violations are considered serious (felony), and may lead to a prison for a few months or even years, often with the confiscation of the vehicle and the subsequent ban on the registration, as well as long-term deprivation of driving license.

The list of sentences is diverse enough. It may be (in various combinations): a fine, mandatory passage of driving courses, deprivation of driving license, the ban on driving with any alcohol content (as a term and lifetime), mandatory installation of alcolocks, imprisonment (it can be replaced by house arrest or community service). The penalty increases markedly if there are minor children the car, the alcohol concentration is much higher than normal, or there are victims.
