Influence of Leadbelly to the Music Industry

Huddie William Ledbetter, known as Leadbelly or Ice Belli was an American singer, a composer, a guitarist, a legendary blues singer, who had a very great influence on later musicians. There is a version that he received his nickname Leadbelly for his strength and endurance.

Leadbelly knew almost all the songs of his time that had any relation to the repertoire of black musicians in general and the blues in particular, from the European ballads to gangster blues, from working songs to church chants, from the prison songs to the cowboy ones. The basis of his songs was folk songs of black people.

Leadbelly learned how to play the accordion in early childhood by his father, and then he mastered the piano, mandolin, and harmonica. He also had a good voice, a powerful baritone.

Once in Dallas, Leadbelly met with Blind Lemon Jefferson, whom he first accompanied at concerts, and later played duo together.

In July 1933, John Lomax, a known finder and collector of American folk music, came to Angola to record Leadbelly to the Library of Congress. Lomax could not believe his good fortune, and a few months later he returned with new equipment recording more songs of Leadbelly.

A year after Leadbelly’s death, the band The Weavers put his song Goodnight Irene on top of the American charts, and from that moment all Leadbelly’s songs were used very often. His songs were divided into two unequal groups: one part was popularized mainly by Woody Guthrie and gave rise to the country and folk styles; the second part with the help of the Taj Mahal, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry, and others formed in the eastern blues, and later through Led Zeppelin and The Beatles became rock. All these events are mostly related to the 1960s.

In Leadbelly’s hometown, Shreveport, there is a monument to the singer. In 1980, Leadbelly became a part of the Hall of Fame of Nashvile Songwriter Assiciation, in 1986 he was enlisted in the Blues Hall of Fame of Blues Foundation, and in 1988 he was in enlisted in famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Kurt Cobain was a big fan of Leadbelly’s creativity; a considerable part of the band’s songs have been played and written with the use of the legendary 12-string guitar. Nirvana band performed a cover version of Where Did You Sleep Last Night? during an acoustic concert of Nirvana in New York as part of the show MTV Unplugged, also calling Leadbelly their favorite singer. This entry is present on the album of MTV Unplugged in New York. Also, Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, in particular, performed and recorded several cover versions of the song and some other known compositions of Leadbelly, which can be found in their box set With the Lights Out.
