America’s Crime Fighters Need DNA Fingerprinting

DNA fingerprinting is a system of scientific methods of biological identification of individuals (organisms) on the basis of the sequence uniqueness of nucleotides alternation in a DNA chain of each living being (except identical twins). This is a kind of genetic fingerprint of an individual that remains unchanged throughout the life of the individual.

This method was discovered on September 10, 1984 by British geneticist Alec Jeffreys. DNA fingerprinting is used throughout the world mostly in criminology during forensic medical examinations to reveal a variety of crimes, as well as to establish a relationship and solve many other problems associated with the identification of the individual.

Today, DNA fingerprinting is carried out, even in portable laboratories, and dozens of companies in the world produce equipment for genetic fingerprinting of an individual.

In the course of criminal investigations of DNA obtained from hair samples, bodily fluids and skin found at the crime scene is compared with the DNA of suspects. For the first time, DNA fingerprinting was used in order to maintain law and order in the mid-1980s in the UK and the US. Currently, most of the work on the judicial DNA- fingerprinting for local and state services in the US is done in the FBI lab. Some private biotechnology companies also provide services for DNA fingerprinting.

In many states, the introduction of DNA fingerprinting in forensic medicine practice has received a positive response, because it was used to prove the involvement of a large number of prisoners for crimes in which they were accused. It also ensured the rehabilitation of a number of citizens unjustly accused.

The widespread introduction of DNA fingerprinting in the judicial practice has led to the publication of some state laws requiring the mandatory implementation of DNA fingerprinting of criminals accused of sexual and other offenses for the subsequent entering of the information in the data base of the state. Senior law enforcement agencies hope to eventually unite the FBI database and individual state data to create a unified national database, which would allow within the minimum time intervals compare the genetic material from the crime scene with those of known offenders.

DNA fingerprinting is also used for the identification of human remains, for example, to establish the identity of an unknown soldier, or disaster victims. Now all US troops give their DNA samples in the database that ensures reliable identification even in case of loss of a soldier’s metal badge with the registration number.
