Florence's Market in the Renaissance

Interested in learning more about the Renaissance? Then you should know that it’s all about a rebirth that happened almost in all European countries. The most important detail is that the major changes associated with this period started in Florence before being more pervasive in other regions. Basically, this city was famous for its economy, painters, writers, philosophers, and architects who make it a perfect model for Renaissance culture.

In the 15th century, this city was one of the best places to visit and list while being an independent and self-governed city-state. There were 12 artist guilds responsible for regulating all trades and they were a foundation of the commercial success of Florence. Their members were quite wealthy and had important positions in the government so that it’s no wonder they included some of the most powerful people in such fields as economy, politics, and society. This city had its strong political philosophy and economy so that it was flourishing.

Keep in mind that some of the most influential guilds were represented by textile workers because a big part of the wealth of Florence was dependent on trading and manufacturing cloths, including wools. These materials of a superior quality were often bought untreated and unfinished from such countries as Iberia and England. Then local workers cleaned, spun, carded, wove, and dyed them into the cloths of the best quality. They were sold in different regions, including Italy, European cities, and many eastern countries. Besides, other textile professionals bought some inferior cloths from northern regions to refinish and clean them to be able to create superior items.

However, Florence was different from Venice because it wasn’t a port city, and this means that sea trading wasn’t a major source of its income, unlike banking. Many local families were successful and wealthy bankers, and a local gold coin was famous as a florin. The most prominent fact is that it has incredible purity so that it was used as a standard coinage by other European countries at that time. Local bankers were also famous because they established many reliable banking houses in other areas, including Belgium, London, and Geneva. That’s why Florence and its market played an important role in the Renaissance. For many historians and artists, it’s impossible to imagine this period without this city, its bankers, sculptors, artists, and others.
