The Cultural Relativism in the Peace Corps

Cultural relativism is the direction in ethnography, denying ethnocentrism – European-American grading system – and recognizing that all cultures are equal. Each culture is a unique system of values. The beginning to this direction was laid by Franz Boas.

The peculiarity of this approach is that it considers all cultural varieties and the behavior of people of other cultures without prejudice, making a start from their own values equal to the values of other cultures, rather than relying on the observer’s culture, which adopted as a point of the proper reference standard. Cultural relativism is committed to understanding other cultures, rather than evaluating them as strange. Forms of cultural relativism range from milder to more severe, but its supporters are unanimous in saying that different norms and values are formed in specific social contexts. And the way how these rules evolved and what affected these processes should be analyzed for an understanding of certain specific cultural manifestations.

Cultural relativism is an essential if you want to become a volunteer at Peace Corps. Peace Corps is an independent federal agency of the US government. It was founded on March 1, 1961, and approved by the US Congress on September 22, 1961 by accepting a law about Peace Corps (Peace Corps Act, Public Law 87-293). This is a humanitarian organization that sends volunteers to disaster-stricken countries for assistance.

Cultural relativism in Peace Corps helps people to assess cultures without bias and prevents many prejudices and stereotypes. The organization has proven to be an effective tool in breaking down discrimination and labelling among Americans by accepting and embracing other cultures.

In the US, training of volunteers going abroad for a long time was based on the didactic model of cultural-specific education. Volunteers of the Peace Corps as well as representatives of governmental organizations are acquainted with the history, government, customs, and traditions of the host country in order to be prepared once in the country.

Volunteers are also taught cultural relativism, the main idea of which is the recognition of equality of cultural values, created by different people. According to cultural relativism, there are no elite or inferior cultures, all cultures are unique in their own way, and it is a mistake comparing them with each other. In other words, cultures of all peoples are equal, but the value of each of them can be judged only within a given culture.

The principle of cultural relativism plays an important role in intercultural communication, because it requires respect and tolerance to the norms, values, and types of behavior of foreign cultures.

Cultural relativism is the direction in ethnography, denying ethnocentrism – European-American grading system – and recognizing that all cultures are equal. Each culture is a unique system of values. The beginning to this direction was laid by Franz Boas.
