Review Analysis on Korean Conflicts

The origins of the current tensions on the Korean peninsula were laid in 1945, when World War II ended. A characteristic feature of the development of political dialogue, relations between North and South is their instability and vulnerability to booms and slumps.

Up until 1945, Korea was a colony of Japan. The defeat of the Kwantung Army of Japan by the Red Army led to the liberation of North Korea in August 1945. By agreement between the Allies, two temporary zones have been identified in Korea for accepting the surrender of the Japanese Army.

In 1947, the question of creation of a unified state in Korea was submitted by the US to the UN discussions, decided to hold elections under the supervision of the UN commission. In May 1948, South Korea held parliamentary elections and on August 15 1948, the Republic of Korea was proclaimed.

In response the North help elections in the Supreme People’s Assembly of Korea and the on September 9, 1948 the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was proclaimed.

Military and political differences between states with different social and political systems have resulted in war in the early 1950s.

The conflict began on June 25, 1950. The fighting on the side of the Republic of Korea was attended by the US military contingents and 15 other countries, operating under the flag of the UN multinational force, on the side of North Korea – China and the Soviet Union.

In July 1951, the front stabilized on the 38th parallel, where military operations started. The war has acquired positional character. On July 27, 1953, there was signed an agreement on ceasefire in Panmunjom.

On Armistice Agreement, North and South Korea are divided by the military demarcation line, on both sides of which the demilitarized line runs of a total width of 4 kilometers.

The Korean peninsula is technically still at war, because the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice, not a peace treaty.

In 1991, North and South Korea signed the Agreement on reconciliation, non-aggression, cooperation and exchanges, and in 1992, they adopted a Joint Declaration on the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

On June 15, 2000, the first inter-Korean summit in history was held in Pyongyang. According to its results Kim Jong Il and the Kim Dae Jung signed a Joint Declaration between North and South now regarded as a fundamental instrument in matters of union in the long term.

The worsening of the situation in the peninsula took place in October 2006 and May 2009, when North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test. Repeatedly there were armed clashes between North and South Korea that led to the loss of human lives and put the whole process of inter-Korean rapprochement to the brink of collapse.
