Ethics in Science

Ethics is a broad term. In simple words, it is a set of principles that establish a relatively clear, distinguished difference between the good and the bad. In more of an applicable language, ethics is all about norms that characterize acceptable and inacceptable (behavior, language, etc.)

When it comes to science, the question of ethics arises in an especially acute manner. Science has a lot to do with experiments, observations, testings, and researches. Thus, it has a lot to do with people. In their turn, people are complex and complicated; their ideas of what is right and wrong differ from one to another. This is where the issue comes from: any scientific research is inevitably to be criticized by some and labeled unethical or sometimes even immoral.

Experiments, especially the ones where the subjects of an experiment do know acknowledge that they are under observation, get the most critique. The Stanford Prison Experiment is among the ones that has been discussed thousands of times and has never acquired a clear conclusion of whether it was ethical or not. Similarly, people often argue the ethics of certain brands and manufacturers that test their products on animals. Yet, even more often people complain about other people being treated no better that lab rats.

The ethical norms are usually outlined in country’s constitution or some legislative document. However, there are some universal ethical rules that are known almost all around the globe. The Bible is a simple one — The Ten Commandments is a universal set of rules that a believer of a religion is supposed to follow. Yet, it is more of a moral ethics, rather than a constituted one. On the other hand, a Hippocrates's Oath which is given by the doctors ensuring that they are not to harm, is a different kind of ethical norm and is directly related to science and medical research as well.

Generally speaking, the main ideas that are to be taken into consideration when conducting any kind of scientific experiment and/or research require them to comply with the set of basic human rights, current law, social responsibility, animal welfare, and people’s safety. At the end of the day, no publicity is going to support a scientific action if it violates his or her own rights or interests.
