Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Cabinet

Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Cabinet was really one of the most unique in American history.

Presidential Cabinet is the central organ of government of the United States, consisting of the most important officials of the US executive branch of state power. Each of them is appointed by the US President and confirmed by the Senate.

The emergence of this institution is associated with the name of the first US president (George Washington), who first formed a cabinet of four approximate thereto persons – the State Secretary Thomas Jefferson,, Minister of Finance Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox, and Attorney General of the USA Edmund Randolph, who helped in carrying out his duties. Candidates for members of the Cabinet are offered by the US President and submitted to the US Senate for approval in the office by a simple majority. If the appointment is approved by the Senate, they take an oath and then proceed to carry out their duties.

At the party convention of Republicans in Chicago in May 1860, Lincoln was nominated for president in the third round. As a compromise candidate with a relatively small number of enemies he skillfully beat his famous rivals William Seward and Salmon Chase. His colleague and a candidate for the post of vice-president became a staunch opponent of slavery Hannibal Hamlin from the state of Maine.

The election program of the Republicans rejected slavery in the new territories, but did not require its removal in the southern states. It condemned the sale of the interests to the South by the administration of Buchanan, sharply criticized the decision of the Supreme Court in the case Dred Scott, promised in the future law on the rapid settlement of the western regions, favored looser regulations on the adoption of citizenship and the improvement of infrastructure.

However, the composition of Lincoln’s Presidential Cabinet had caused him almost as much trouble in the months after his election as did the withdrawal of Southern states and the pending breakup of the Union. It was difficult to balance act among the different factions of his party, which proclaimed their own and fought others.

While such a team of rivals, which wanted to master Lincoln, he was determined to stay the country’s leader. He repeatedly forced his will on them at critical points – including before the Emancipation Proclamation, Fort Sumter, and the Cabinet crisis of December 1862. He even sent nominations of Cabinet of Senate members to the Senate floor without their approval or even knowledge of it. That’s how he managed to replace Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase with Maine Senator William P. Fessenden in June 1864.
