The New Slave Trade

Slavery is a system of organization of society, where people (slaves) are the property of another person (the owner) or the state.

In paragraph 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations has expanded the concept of a slave to any person, who cannot voluntarily give up the job.

The rapid economic development of mankind and the process of globalization are indirectly responsible for preservation of human trafficking today. In many countries, the Industrial Revolution led to the destruction of traditional rural societies and mass emigration of the rural population to the cities. Employers are interested in cheap labor, and in those countries, where legislation, which protects the rights of hired workers is not developed, there may be various forms of slavery and forced labor. Also the inability or unwillingness of a state to combat organized crime, drug trafficking, etc. plays its role in new slavery.

The exact number of slaves is unknown in the world. In 2005, the UN concluded that every year about 700,000 people become slaves. The organization of Human Rights Watch believes that the actual number of people sold in slavery reaches from 800,000 to 900,000 people. According to the Human Security Center, up to 4 million people are sold into slavery every year.

Slavery, in the traditional sense of the word, and modern slavery seriously differ from each other. In the context of classical slavery, slaveholder had a legal right to have a slave, who was regarded as personal property. The slave and slave owner were in long-term relationships with each other, and slave owner felt some responsibility for the fate of a slave.

New slavery has no legal basis – it is prohibited in all countries of the world. Slave costs have significantly decreased. In some countries, a slave can be bought for less than $100, or exchanged for a goat. According to the organization Free the Slaves, in 1850 in the American South the average slave was sold for an amount equal to $40,000. Now it is possible to buy a slave for $120, which brings the slave owners a considerable profit. Slaveholders and slaves have short-term relationship, while race, language, ethnic, religion, and so on do not matter. The majority of modern-day slaves are employed in agriculture, mining, and prostitution.

Traffickers using threats and violence force the victims to work in conditions comparable to slavery. Modern slavery can take other forms, such as children and adolescents can steal for military service, women and children are used as domestic servants in the onerous conditions, etc. Modern slaves are often the victims of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
