Tension between Passion and Emotion

What are emotions all about? What are reasons and passions? Can they play any important role in people’s lives? Can they work together well? It’s necessary to give answers to these basic questions if you want to get a better idea of tension between emotions and passions. Basically, reasoning is the mental power focused on forming different inferences, conclusions, good sense, and judgements.

When it comes to passions and emotions, you need to realize that they are the strong agitations of feelings caused by experiencing hate or love. Pay attention to the works and ideas of Plato, a famous and talented philosopher of ancient times. The main reason is that he provides readers with completely different definitions of these terms because he connects each one to people’s soul, thus giving them a more important function.

Besides, Plato divides a soul into a few basic parts, reasoning, desires, and spirit. Keep in mind that your desire is all about your feelings, emotions, and desires. If you want chocolate, this philosopher would say that it’s your soul that desired it. Reasoning is another essential part of your soul, and it’s called intelligence, logic, and wisdom. One of the most effective examples is your decision not to eat chocolate because you don’t want to get fat, and Plato refers this action as the use of your reasoning.

However, the most important part of your soul is the spirit because it tells you what to do in every situation. This means that it decided on the right action to be performed under certain circumstances, and it can be pulled either by your reasoning or your desires. Take into consideration the above-mentioned examples. When using the concept developed by Plato, it’s possible to conclude that emotions and reasoning can work together well, but one of them is always presented stronger than others in specific characters.

Finally, you should consider a few characters from famous Greek tragedies to prove this important concept. Medea and Prometheus can suit this purpose perfectly because these characters have different interactions between the main parts of their souls and they are strongly observable. Don’t forget that they are completely distinctive at the same time. Prometheus prefers to demonstrate more reasoning than his emotions or passions, unlike Medea who makes other choices in terms of her soul parts, but they both prove Plato’s concept.
