Douglas Dunn and Trisha Brown in Dancing World

Douglas Dunn and Trisha Brown are American postmodernist dancers and choreographers.

Douglas Dunn is considered to be a highly eclectic and minimalist postmodern choreographer, who applies humor, props, and text in his dances.

Both Douglas Dunn and Trisha Brown had great impact in the dancing world. They were the ones who along with other choreographers introduced postmodern in dancing.

The real beginning of the postmodern dance should be considered the activities of Judson Dance Theater. It’s kind of the level of zero in the development of dance, experiment with all primary components of the art of dance. This theater has provided the world a few world-renowned choreographers, including Steve Paxton, founder of Contact Improvisation, which has had a great influence on contemporary dance in general and dance therapy in particular.

Many choreographic works of various members of the Judson Dance Theatre bear the imprint of the experience of improvisation. They are very individual and often show the creation process of a dance itself. Trisha Brown has introduced ex-prompt spoken instructions as a part of the trans-structured performance; Douglas Dunn involved the audience in participation, both physical and verbal; David Gordon mystified viewers, confusing them what was spontaneous, and what was provided for staging.

It turned out that improvisational performances possess special powers. The process in them is more interesting than the result. Art stops to be a packaged product that can be bought and sold. Live performance is a phenomenon of the moment: transient and ephemeral. People studying the improvisational dance and theater, appreciated this spontaneity.

Trisha Brown together with like-minded artists such as Steve Paxton and Yvonne Rainer rejected many of the conventions, which was fruitful for choreography at the time and gave impetus to contemporary dance for the future.

Trisha Brown was the first of the women choreographers who received honorary MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. In 2003, she received the National Medal of Arts. In 1998, she was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France. Then, in 2000 she received the title of Officer of the Order, and in 2004 – Commander. Installing and reinstalling is included in the training plan of French students to obtain a bachelor’s degree in the study of dance. In 1994, she won the Prize of Samuel Scripps of American Dance Festival, and at the invitation of President Bill Clinton was part of the National Council for the Arts in 1994-1997.
