Events in the movie take place in 1947. Maine Court hears the case against the vice-president of the bank Andy Dufresne accusing him of murdering his wife and her lover. Andy does not recognize his guilt, but he also does not remember what he had been doing on the night of the murder, because he was drunk. Shortly before the murder Andy caught his wife with another man, but refused to give her divorce. His wife left the house the same evening. Andy went to the bar, then back home, where he found no one, so he decided to wait for his wife and her lover. Andy had a gun with him. After some time Andy goes home, and in the morning the maid finds his wife with her lover shot to death. Police could not find the gun Andy threw in the river; other evidence also points that Andy is guilty. Court sentenced Andy to two life sentences. He goes to Shawshank, one of the most sinister prisons of New England.
Two months after his arrival in prison, Andy meets a black prisoner Red, who organizes delivery of various goods to the prison through illegal channels. Andy ordered a stone hammer, explaining his request with love for processing stones.
Later Andy becomes a worker of the library, where he gives financial and legal advice to prison guards, helping to fill in tax returns. Gradually the director of the prison draws Andy to his financial machinations in laundering the money.
Andy meets Tommy Williams, who tells Andy about his former cell mate, who killed the owner of a golf club with his mistress and her husband, a banker, was put in prison for the murder. Andy realizes that was the murder he was accused of, and is trying to persuade the warden to assist in the review of his case, but gets a firm refusal, because Andy was involved in his machinations and was beneficial to him as a free personal financier.
One evening in conversation with Red, Andy said that when he released from prison, he would open a hotel on the Pacific coast in Mexico. Andy asks Red to remember the name of the town. The next morning, Andy was not found in his cell. It turned out that he had escaped through the hole he was digging all this time with the hammer he asked Red to get him.
Andy’s example, who in spite of everything, remained true to himself and was able to escape, proves that the main thing is in any case not to lose hope.
