The Hunter and the Hunted

In 1981, John Oakley directed a documentary The Hunter and the Hunted, which was mostly filmed in South America. Oakley had to risk his team in order to get a sensational video material. Despite all the danger, and psychological pressure throughout the whole documentary, the inventive talent and efforts of the small Australian film crew made it possible to create an outstanding documentary.

The documentary tells about Nazi war criminals and their location, as well as about Nazi hunters who were seeking their arrest and prosecution. The documentary was filmed on the territories of such countries as Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Germany, France, the UK, and Israel. The documentary lasts for 58 minutes and was first shown on PBS. William Bemister, who worked on the documentary as a producer-correspondent, won the Emmy in 1981 for an outstanding program achievement on the U.S. network television.

The documentary included the identification of the whereabouts of the two most wanted Nazi criminals, Walter Rauff and Klaus Barbie. The footage on these men filmed secretly and the interview with the son of Adolf Eichmann, who discusses the case against his father, received wide acclaim in the media.

Walter Rauff was the SS Standartenfuehrer. During the fighting in North Africa, he was responsible for the persecution of Jews. At the end of the war Rauff surrendered to American troops and was placed in internment camps in Rimini, from where he escaped in December 1946. In the late 1940s, he served in the Secret Service of Syria, but after the fall of his patron President Hosni al-Loan he fled to Ecuador. In 1958, Rauff settled in Chile. In 1962, he was arrested at the request of Germany, but the Supreme Court of Chile refused to issue him. In the future, several requests for extradition of Rauff were rejected with reference to the decision of the Supreme Court. In 1983, the famous Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld, who arrived in Chile to achieve Rauff’s extradition, was arrested. After that, the Chilean government was criticized by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and US Department of State, however, Rauff was never extradited. In 1981, Rauff was interviewed for the documentary by William Bemister. On May 14, 1984 Rauff died of cancer in Santiago.

Klaus Barbie, also known as the butcher of Lyon, was a German war criminal, convicted in 1947 and 1987. He emigrated to Bolivia, where he was found by French journalists Serge and Beate Klarsfeld in the early 1970s. In 1983, Barbie was extradited to France, where he was prosecuted. Barbie was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in a French prison of cancer.
